The critically acclaimed game also set a launch day and monthly sales record for the game series. Though, it was not clearly mentioned in the press release, it seems that the sales include numbers from “Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition” which released back in 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level,” said Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics. “The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players. Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.

The Tomb Raider reboot managed to breathe new life into the franchise by adding a few changes and served as a sort pre-boot to the series. The game also revealed the origin story for lead protagonist Lara Croft. It then went on to win numerous awards since its launch, including IGN’s Best Overall Game of E3 2012.

A sequel for the game, dubbed Rise of the Tomb Raider, will be out later this year for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Sadly, the game is a timed exclusive for the Xbox consoles, so there will be no PC or PlayStation version till the deal with Microsoft has expired. The game also boasts of diverse locations and encourages exploration
