This year, the elite guys all have some things in common. They do well after the catch, they generate a lot of targets in the red zone, and they have some downfield receiving ability. The tight ends that can do all of these are few and far between, but if you land one of them, you don’t really have to worry much about the position throughout the year.

Beyond the top guys, there are a slew of unproven players with upside, namely George Kittle and Trey Burton, some injury-prone veterans (Jordan Reed and Tyler Eifert), and some boring veteran sleepers with the potential to breakout in tight end friendly offenses (Ben Watson and Luke Willson). If you’re in the territory where drafting one of these guys to be a starter is necessary, you may be best served to pair a young option with upside with a steady veteran, such as a combination of Kittle and Watson.
