God of War is among the many PlayStation exclusives now available on PC, which has helped sales tremendously, as before there was no other way to play the console exclusives unless having owned a PlayStation. It could be said that because of this business strategy, God of War was able to pass an incredible sales milestone.

The game sold 3 million copies in its first 3 days of being available on PC, and now God of War has surpassed 23 million copies between PC and PS4. God of War now stands with The Last of Us, Horizon, and the Uncharted franchise as PlayStation’s most prized gaming IPs. To further this, PlayStation has found success with certain protagonist archetypes in gaming, as Kratos and Joel have similar traits that make them interesting and exciting characters. There have also been theories on how God of War Ragnarok could swap its main protagonist with Kratos’s son, similar to what The Last of Us Part 2 did with Joel and Ellie.

The ninth entry in the God of War franchise releases in a few days, which is the second entry since the reboot and transition from Greek mythology to Norse. According to the game developers, this reboot could have kick-started a trilogy of Norse mythology narratives in God of War, however the Norse arc will fittingly end with God of War Ragnarok. WIth what God of War has become for PlayStation in terms of financial success, players may wonder what the company will want to do next with the franchise regarding the possibility of another potential reboot or continuation of the same storyline starting with what was already established.

The changes made to the 2018 reboot of God of War were risky at the time of its inception, such as drastic changes to the gameplay and a more cinematic style of presentation, but those changes were worth the trepidation due to the game’s massive success. The sequel is just around the corner, but fans should still try to avoid leaked spoilers for God of War Ragnarok so their experience can be just as meaningful as it was with its predecessor.

God of War is available on PS4 and PC.
